2013 Nissan Altima Production Begins in Mississippi

The Canton Nissan plant in the state of Mississipi began making the Altima back in 2004, and now its employees will work on the new, fifth-generation model, as the 2013 model year car has begun rolling off the line.

The Canton plant, which also builds body-on-frame trucks, has put full priority o the 2013 Altima, building it in three shifts.

The new 2013 model year midsize sedan is actually based on the old model’s platform, but it has been heavily restyled and modified.

The base 2013 Altima comes with a 2.5-liter 182hp inline-four, starting at $21,500 and the top-of-the line model gets a 3.5-liter V6, in SL trim, it will grab just over $30,000.

“Today’s successful start of production of the Nissan Altima, our top-selling vehicle, only can happen because of the support of our dedicated workforce in Canton,” said Bill Krueger, vice chairman, Nissan Americas. “The Canton team builds among the highest-quality vehicles in the industry, and we are looking forward to bringing their production expertise to the next generation of this award-winning car.”

2013 Nissan Sentra sedan snapped wearing stripes

Nissan is making waves with the promise of five new products in the next year, including an all-new Sentra, arguably the model in the company's portfolio that could most use a redesign. Our spy shooters have now captured the forthcoming Sentra and we're happy to say that it looks to be a major upgrade in attractiveness, both inside and out. The Sentra also looks to have grown, as it continues its transition upmarket, further distancing itself from the Versa.

Though it's hard to see under the zebra skin, a swooping character line that runs from front to back seems appears to mimic what we're seeing in newer Nissan models like the 2013 Pathfinder and Altima, and the Sentra's instrument panel is a perfectly sculpted match. It looks like the new model will get a whole host of other upgrades, including LED taillights and some metal-finish accents on the interior. We also hear that Nissan will be installing a direct-injected 1.8-liter four-cylinder underhood, which will come with either a CVT or a six-speed manual.

While it might be hard to imagine getting excited about a Sentra again, we had high hopes based on official images of the Chinese-market Nissan Sylphy, which is essentially the same car. That these spy photos confirm a much more stylish Sentra only makes us eager to get behind the wheel, though we'll have to await until after the official reveal at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show.
