Honda Civic 1.6 Diesel Gets Its First Fleet Sale in UK

Honda Civic 1.6 Diesel Gets Its First Fleet Sale in UK
Just a few days after the official launch of production in Swindon, Honda has secured the first local fleet sale for the car from Co’dair Group, an Essex-based design and publicity agency, which has ordered 18 of the cars, replacing its entire fleet.

The new 1.6-liter turbo diesel was built from the ground up with the European market in mind. It produces 120 PS and 300 Nm of torque at 2,000rpm, emitting only 94 grams per kilometer of CO2, ideal for fleet use.

John Dedross, Managing Director of The Co’dair Group, commented: “Part of our decision-making process was the need to engage with a supplier which not only understands how its vehicles fit into our business now, but also how we plan for the future.”

He added; “We have always demanded a lot from our vehicles and suppliers. Honda has the strength and depth to meet our requirements. By selecting the 1.6-litre diesel engine we have reduced our drivers’ Benefit In Kind taxation, fuel costs and service and maintenance budget.”

Honda recalling 50,000 new Civic models over driveshaft fear

Honda recalling 50,000 new Civic models over driveshaft fear
Honda has issued a voluntary recall of its 2012 Civic over a potential issue with the left driveshaft. There are 50,000 cars that might be affected by an improperly assembled part. The fault can lead to the shaft dislodging from the outer CV joint while the car is moving, resulting in a loss of power and the inability to prevent the car from rolling away in certain conditions when the car is parked.

No accidents or deaths have been reported over the issue. Honda will notify owners beginning later this month, at which time they can take their cars to their dealers for inspection.

Honda "losing money" on Japan-built cars like Fit, CR-Z and Insight

 Honda
Automotive News reports Honda is currently limiting shipments of models like the Fit, CR-Z and Insight due to Japan's strong yen. The automaker admits it is currently losing money on every Japanese-built model it sells in the U.S. with the exchange rate currently at 80 yen per dollar. Honda is currently working to move more production to North America and source more components from this side of the Pacific, though such a shift will take time. In the interim, the manufacturer is carefully allocating Japanese-manufactured models. Honda says it has no intention to cut off Fit, CR-Z or Insight shipments altogether.

Honda builds around 85 percent of the vehicles it sells in North America on the continent, which is significantly more than companies like Nissan or Toyota. Even so, this marks the first time Honda has gone on the record as saying importing cars from Japan costs more money than it makes.

So, why sell these models at all? Automotive News reports Honda needs the vehicles to keep segments covered and to keep its customers coming back to showrooms.

Ford, Hyundai show largest increase in perceived quality, Honda tops

ALG reports both Ford and Hyundai have seen substantial jumps in their respective perceived quality, with the Blue Oval enjoying a 37 percent jump since 2008. Hyundai, meanwhile, has seen its figures increase by 25 percent over the same five years. For industry watchers, the news should offer no real shock. Both manufacturers have been on a new-product warpath, offering models laden with fresh design, efficient drivetrain options and plenty of technology while steadily increasing quality. The increase has been enough to push Ford to fourth on the list of brands with the highest perceived quality with a score of 70.5. That score puts Ford just behind Subaru with a score of 71.1.

Ford and Hyundai may have had strong showings, but Honda has snagged top honors among mainstream brands with an 81.3 perceived quality score, followed by Toyota with 80.1. Lexus walked away with the highest rank among luxury brands, followed by Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Cadillac, Lincoln and Jaguar, meanwhile, all fell below the luxury

ALG's Perceived Quality Study surveys more than 3,000 U.S. consumers on a semi-annual basis.

Ford, Hyundai Show Long-Term Improvement in Perceived Quality

Honda, Lexus take top spot in ALG's annual measurement of perceived quality among consumers; Toyota's reputation continues to rebound

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Ford and Hyundai have had the highest level of improvement in perception of quality among all automakers during the last 5 years according to ALG, the industry benchmark for vehicle values. Since 2008, Ford's perception of quality has improved nearly 37%, while Hyundai's perception of quality has increased by 25% during that time period. The release of ALG's 2012 Perceived Quality Study (PQS) shows Ford ranking fourth, with Hyundai above the mainstream average.

Honda ranks highest among mainstream brands with a perceived quality score of 81.3, followed closely by Toyota, whose perception of quality continues to recover from its drop in 2010. Toyota showed the largest year-over-year perception improvement of any brand. Honda and Toyota continue to be the perception of quality standard bearers among mainstream brands, with Subaru ranking third.

Among luxury brands, Lexus is highest ranked for the second consecutive year, with a perceived quality score of 85.4. Three European brands – Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche round out the top four.

"Changing the perception of quality is a long-term proposition," said Eric Lyman, ALG's Vice President of Residual Value Solutions. "Consumers recognize the product improvements made by Ford and Hyundai. Honda and Toyota are still widely recognized as being the quality leaders, but as more consumers increasingly consider brands like Subaru, Ford and Hyundai, that perception gap erodes."

Other brands showing significant year-over-year improvement include Fiat, Scion, Dodge and Kia.

"Kia and Dodge are great examples of perception improvement based on product and marketing," said Lyman. "Both brands have launched exciting new product and impactful messaging. While they both face significant history to overcome, consumers are beginning to recognize their improvement."

Now in its fifth year, ALG's Perceived Quality Study is a semi-annual consumer survey measuring the perceived quality of automotive brands. PQS reports the opinions of more than 3,000 U.S. consumers in order to gauge perceptions of mainstream and luxury brands. PQS is one of the metrics ALG examines in calculating our industry benchmark residual values, helping companies and consumers understand the future value of their vehicles.

The complete list with scores and details is available here.

2012 Honda Insight Facelift Introduced in Australia

2012 Honda Insight Facelift Introduced in Australia
The 2012 Honda Insight was just introduced by Honda to the Australian market. The refreshed car comes with improved equipment as well as better efficiency for the hybrid drivetrain system. Prices for the 2012 Insight VTi stat at $29,990.

If you’re into the boring stuff, we’ll tell you that the engines that resulted in the improved efficiency come in the form of changes to the engine, transmission, aerodynamics, improved electrics. The economy has thus been increased by 6.5 percent on the Australian cycle to 4.3 l/100km, which isn’t really that impressive.

The vehicle is powered by the same IMA system that includes a 1.3-liter petrol unit and a 10kW electric motor (the two produce a combined 98 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque) with the CVT that controls the flow of power now coming with reduced friction.

Honda Elysion MPV Launched on Chinese Market

Honda Elysion MPV Launched on Chinese Market

Honda’s Chinese joint venture with local manufacturer Dongfen has produced its second MPV, the new (and slightly awkward-looking) Elysion. The car will go up against other large MPVs, though its main rival on the domestic market will be the huge Buick GL8 which is also built in China.

The car will only be available with a 2.4-liter petrol engine which puts out 178hp. Its main riva, the GL8 also offers a 3.0-liter V6 option for those wanting a little bit of extra shove. In order to compete with the Buick, though, Honda is expected to add a V6 to the range soon after launch.

Prices for the Honda Elysion range between 283.800 (€35,700) and 319.800 yuan (€40,100). The Elysion is now the second MPV offering from Honda, with the considerably sleeker-looking Odyssey, a car which has been available in China since 2009.

The Honda Fit EV Earns Highest EPA MPG Rating

The Honda Fit EV Earns Highest EPA MPG Rating
The fully electric version of the top-notch Honda Fit subcompact is currently in its testing phase and recently, it hit a serious milestone.  When given to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the zero emissions five door went on a journey to show just how efficient it can be.  The results speak for themselves as at the end of testing, the car managed to return the highest fuel efficiency rating ever given by the EPA.  With a combined total equivalency rating of 118 MPGe, the Fit EV can officially out mileage the likes of the Focus Electric, LEAF and i-MiEV.

The EPA uses real-world testing to determine its mileage ratings for vehicles and has determined the Fit EV should average 132 MPGe in the city and 105 MPGe on the highway.  To pinpoint an electric vehicle’s equivalency rating, driving range and kilowatt per hour are taking into consideration.  With a consumption of 29 kWh per 100 miles and a segment leading 82 mile driving range, the Fit EV should prove to be one efficient alternative when it public debut hits.  Along with efficiency should be another one-up: Honda charm.

“Just as important as the industry-leading fuel-efficiency and fast recharging time, as a Honda, the 2013 Fit EV will be an absolute kick to drive,” said Steve Center, vice president of the American Honda Environmental Business Development Office.  Putting 123 horsepower (92 kilowatts) and 189 lb-ft of torque to the ground, the light weight, short wheelbase, fully independent suspended electric hatch will surely be a hoot to drive.  The car’s east coast debut will take place in 2013 and more market reveals will happen soon after.

2020 Honda S2000 - As Seen by Design Student

2020 Honda S2000 - As Seen by Design Student
Re-imagining the Honda S2000, the last Honda we would actually buy, is a tall order. The car went on sale in 1999 and sold 112,000 units over the 10 year life.

The original car featured an excellent 240 hp 2.0-liter engine which revved all the way to 9000 rpm. It was also a great handling and great looking car, with classic sports car proportions - an evolution of the Mazda MX-5, which itself is the evolution of the light British sports car, which has mostly died out in its motherland. This new version was thought up by design student Michael Mcgee, and it’s clearly a lot bolder than an official Honda concept ever could be. It’s a stunning piece of design which blends the classic front engined RWD shape with extremely modern touches, and we think it’s a genuinely great piece of design.

In his own words, the creator of the concept says: "My design is classic and advanced simultaneously. It uses simple surfacing but an innovative frame structure and function to balance a raw, classic sports car attitude with an advanced concept that pushes into the future. The inspiration is an R/C car, shown by the structure design and the emphasis on lightness and plastics. The yellow body sides of the car can be exchanged for other styles and colors based on the customers wants. These body sides also function as large doors."
