BMW Individual 7-Series by Didit Hediprasetyo

BMW Individual 7-Series by Didit Hediprasetyo
BMW is looking to take its Individual line even further, with the company announcing an ultra-special 7-Series created by Indonesian rising design star Didit Hediprasetyo, a collaboration that marks BMW's first tie-up with an Asian designer.

Only five units of the vehicle are to be produced, with this already being on sale since last month. The vehicle has, of course, benefited from the experience of BMW Individual designers, but the Bavarians are also allowing customers to choose various bits and pieces, in order to transform this into a tailor-made experience.

The vehicle is dressed in a color named Frozen Diamond Metallic and also comes with BMW Individual rims. However, the real treat can be found inside the car.

Here, we get a Merino Silk Grey leather finish, while the pipping uses Meriona Platinum to create a contrast. On the headliner, we find Alcantara or Nappa leather, also finished in Silk Grey (this includes the roof, pillars, sun visors and rear shelf) and the interior trimming uses Piano Black lacquer.

The final piece comes in the form of black ostrich leather floor mats. The same material is used for two special pillows, while the headrests come with embossed Didit Hediprasetyo logos. The list of goodies also includes a BMW Individual refrigerator box with champagne glass holders placed in the center armrest, a folding table finished in Silk grey leather, monitors for those in the back a vanity compartment placed in the roof liner, as well as a dob basket, which also uses silk grey leather or Alcantara.

Diesel 7-Series Raises Hopes for US-Bound 335d and 535d

Diesel 7-Series Raises Hopes for US-Bound 335d and 535d
Last month, German luxury automaker revealed the facelift for the biggest car they make, the 7-Series that signaled a new and much appreciated design change for the automaker. This brought about the introduction of the new tri-turbo diesel engine to the range and a number of other upgrades.

BMW reportedly wants a diesel 7-Series in America, but not the tri-turbo which would not be viable given the number of years the 7er has left. Instead, either the 735d or 740d will be introduced next year in the US.

BimmerPost suggests this raises hopes for the introduction of the 3-Series and 5-Series models with the same engine. You see, making a diesel comply with strict US emissions laws which aren’t kind to the way diesel engines starts, would be a bit too expensive to only one model.

When asked about their diesel ambitions, BMW North America told Bimmerpost that "our last outgoing model [e90] was very successful with the diesel so we’re thinking about it."

Currently, the straight-six engine in a 535d puts out 313 horsepower (230 kW) and 630 Nm of torque from just 1,500 rpm. However, America likes to differentiate economy from performance, so the 530d with 255hp (258PS) and 560Nm (413 lb-ft) of torque is also a possibility.

BMW 7-Series Getting Diesel in US

BMW 7-Series Getting Diesel in US
The F01 7-Series is that car that remade BMW’s image into what it should have been, an evolution from the luxury models of two generations ago, not the strange design we had become accommodated to. Starting this summer, the 7er will become available as a LCI facelift with slight improvements to the design and revised engines.

The US market will also get this update, but that’s not the end of the story. According to Car and Driver magazine, the 7-Series will become available with diesel engines in the US starting next year.

We are talking about 3-liter six-cylinder diesel for the 735d or the 740d, most likely the latter due to the higher output that better fits the prestigious brand. However, the new tri-turbo introduced to the 5-Series, X5 and X6 won’t be made available in the US, even though it has been installed on the 7-Series.

BMW M7 talk picks up speed

BMW M7 talk picks up speed
With Mercedes-Benz and Audi happy to slake the world's appetite for top-dollar, full-size luxury sports sedans through their AMG and S divisions, we can't help but wonder why it's taken so long for BMW to commit to an M7 model.

For years, the sportiest 7 Series in the U.S. has been the Alpina B7, which has been heavily breathed-upon by the namesake tuner and offered through official BMW dealers. Most recently, Car and Driver reopened the discussion just last month.

While the company still isn't officially committing to an M7, TheDetroitBureau.com quotes Ludwig Willisch, CEO of BMW North America, as bullish on the model's prospects. According to the the report, while BMW has long maintained that it wouldn't build a 7 Series M, "sentiment appears to be changing, especially with Willisch's counterpart in China also lending his support." Of course, if BMW builds such a model, that doesn't mean we'll see it in the States, but Willisch seems optimistic about our chances.

No timetable has been set, and BMW has been occupying its time with the just-revealed 7 Series refresh (and the M division is still busy readying the next M3), so if an M7 is in the cards, it wouldn't surprise us if we had to wait until the next-generation model's arrival.

BMW 7-series facelifted

There are some minor tweaks in the 7-series cabin, the notable additions being a new information display for the driver and monitors for the rear passengers to play around with in the long wheelbase version.

Hope that six-speed automatic tranny is history ...

Oh you bet. Despite its flagship status, the 7-series is one of the last BMW model lines to get an eight-speed automatic standard across the range.

The new transmission helps boost fuel efficiency for the existing motors by around 25%.

And speaking of economy, there are two new choices in the 7-series engine range including a 354hp 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol-electric hybrid for the ActiveHybrid 7 along with a 381hp 3.0-litre tri-turbo diesel for the 750d. Since the all-wheel-drive 750d is tailored only in left-hand-drive _like the all-wheel-drive M550d _ its sales prospect here is nil.

However, the AH 7 has the chance of coming to Thai shores due to the 10% excise rate for hybrid-powered cars. In fact, the AH 7's hybrid is the one shared with the AH 5, just launched in Thailand, and replaces the old 4.4-litre V8 petrol-electric combination.

At less than 10 million baht (and cheaper than the Lexus LS600h), the AH 7 is an ideal alternative to the 740i, 750i, and 760i, thanks to 14.7kpl economy and 5.7sec acceleration time.

Has the 7-series got downsized four-pot engines?

Nope, unlike what has happened in the 5-series in Thailand. Sure, potential badges like the 725d and 728i with 218hp 2.0-litre diesel and petrol engines is possible in theory.

A board member of BMW AG once told Life: "If the market can accept a 7-series with four cylinders, we can easily do it."

But for the time being, the 7-series aren't getting them yet (read about the new engines rated in the 5-series in Life next Monday).

This means that Thais will still be getting the same 219hp 3.0-litre inline-sixes of the 730d and 730i (specially tuned for the Thai market) when the updated 7-series arrives later this year.

Have we got the Mercedes S250 CDI yet?

Not yet, although Mercedes-Benz has already moved down to four-pot power for its diesel-powered S-class in Germany.

A significant advantage of small engines in Thailand is tax. An S300 is subject to 40%, while the S250 can do with just 30%. A 10% tax saving could translate into a million baht deduction for 7 million baht luxury saloons.
