Honda Start Construction of New Indonesian Plant

Honda Start Construction of New Indonesian Plant
Honda want to increase their current Indonesian production from 60,000 units per year, to over 180,000 with the addition of a new plant. The construction of the new factory will take place in a suburb of the Indonesian capital Jakarta, a city of 10-million inhabitants.

The Japanese manufacturer inaugurated the start of construction with a grand ceremony, and Hiroshi Kobayashi, Managing Officer and Chief Operating Officer for Regional Operations of Honda had this to say: "Our operations in Indonesia will take the next step to become more autonomous and play an even more important role for Honda in this region, [...] Honda will not only build automobiles in Indonesia to meet the needs of customers here. Indonesia will serve as a key export base for Honda - for both completed vehicles and components."

Construction costs for the plant rise to around €262- ($326-) million, and it will come online in 2014, to produce the Honda Brio, and a Brio-based (but so far unnamed) small MPV.
