Toyota's Twizy to Be Launched in Japan for €10,000

Toyota's Twizy to Be Launched in Japan for €10,000

Toyota first showed the COMS in public at the Tokyo motor show, back in 2007, purely as a concept for a very small city-dwelling EV. As the title of this article suggests, this is identical in concept and philosophy as Renault’s much talked-about Twizy.

The Japanese EV weighs roughly the same as the Twizy, at 405 kg, but it’s less powerful, with only 7 hp versus the French car’s 17 hp, and also has a lower top speed of 60 km/h (38 mph), which is 20 km/h (12.5 mph) slower. In every other respect, the two cars are basically the same.

With Renault being Renault, a much more style conscious brand than Toyota, the Twizy also wins out in the aesthetics department. But, perhaps, the Japanese need a personal version of the concept, which has been adapted to their tastes and needs, whereas the Twizy will definitely sell well in Europe, and in the US, if it were ever sold there.

The Toyota COMS EV is expected to cost in the region of €10,000, again more expensive than the Twizy, but maybe the Japanese manufacturer will justify the higher price tag with more equipment than you could get on the very stripped out and simple Twizy.
